Observation details
Rare in WA. Initially spotted off Redondo at 0958, well beyond the killer whales that were heading that direction. Estimated 10 kilometers from my location at the tip of Dune. It flew southwest until it was over some of the whales, then turned to follow them tracking north for a short while. After 5-10 minutes it turned again and flew west, until it was in the mouth of Quartermaster Harbor, then banked south and flew straight toward Dune for several minutes. At this point I was able to take some poor digiscoped video. Gulls started harassing it and it turned west again, still closer to Vashon. It continued straight into Dalco Passage (entering Pierce County) and continued out of sight around Point Defiance at 1025. I picked the bird up again suddenly circling around in Dalco at 1125, chased by many gulls. Local eagles also seemed to be taking an interest. Last seen 1135. Adult. “Sulid” shape with long tapered wings held bowed in glide. White belly, pale underwing coverts. Head, neck, and underparts all dark. Bill long and tapered. Tail very long and tapered.
