Observation details
"This report was “not accepted” by KBRC after careful review of all the evidence, but will be continued to be examined. This was an interesting record and the bird was observed, photographed, and videoed by many observers. Many of the photos showed outside tail feathers with lateral white edges which are inconsistent with a Couch’s Kingbird. Or did the bird have an aberrant tail feather(s)? Vocal recordings were not consistent with expected Western Kingbird vocalizations. The bill appeared smaller than what a Couch’s Kingbird should have. Ornithologists’ with experience in the field and museum specimens for this species complex were consulted and they were not certain on species identification. Ultimately, based on the physical evidence, and the input from experts, it was felt that the data presented was inconclusive as to parentage and could not rule out a potential hybrid. Members of the KBRC are continuing to study this record further, and as with all records, it could be re-evaluated in the future."
