Observation details
Adult female. Green back. White below with wide orange flanks. Identified as Rufous Hummingbird by Glenn Coady: the tail photo “conclusively identifies this as an adult female Rufous Hummingbird! Your photo #5171 (first photo ML390600251) showing the dorsal spread tail, clearly depicts an obvious lateral edge emargination of R2 (= female Rufous Hummingbird).” Glenn asked Hummingbird expert Allen Chartier of Michigan to comment: “Luckily, your bird appears to be an adult female, showing the diagnostic "notching" on r2 of Rufous.” Rufous Hummingbirds have 10 tail feathers or retrices. Starting in the middle and counting out, they are numbered on each side: R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5. R2 is the diagnostic feather to check for a notch/emargination.
