Observation details
recorded this bird at 620 AM. I was present as I often am at pre-dawn to listen for what comes in to my micorphone. I heard the bird, and saw a small passerine, but was unable to identify it by sight as lighting was bad. call sounded like a longspur, and came home to check the recordings.Upon reviewing the recording, it sounded like a Smith's Longspur to me. Given the rarity, I consulted with a few others, including Gavin Aquila, Michael O'Brien and Andy Birch, who all agree it's a Smith's Longspur. Unfortunately, this bird is unchaseable as it never stopped. It flew down towards the soccer field where my microphone is but never landed, as is typical here at Rice.
