Perched at the top of a dead tree when it was singing
Observation details
Continuing. Originally found by Anthony and Sheri. Brad saw it just as I was parking. Walked the wide dirt path next to the old RR bed and couldn’t refind. John Nelson, Joe and Cathy C, and Sheri and Wolf looked along with Brad and I. Everyone left except Brad and I started scanning the fence posts along the cotton field before we got ready to leave, too, and there it was. Perched on a low post. It moved S across the posts and dead trees along the fence btwn the cotton and stubble. Then, as Brad and I were walking away, it was refound along the track so we doubled back and got closer looks. Was making some noise at one point and I tried to record. Possibly some low singing. Didn’t get close enough to see the pattern on its front or the hooked bill, but saw well. Diminished/narrower mask than a Loggerhead, smaller billed than I expected, bright white rump, black stripes down wings and on top of the tail, bluish gray back and top of head. Noticed a white arc above and/or below the eye giving the impression of a broken or partial eyering. Felt like I saw it above the eye, but don’t remember 100%. Stretched briefly and saw it catch at least one insect, likely a grasshopper. Flicked its tail often, particularly right after landing. Also, the tail appeared proportionately longer than on a Loggerhead Shrike, but it has been awhile since I have seen a Loggerhead.
