Observation details
***Mega and first state record. Presumably the same bird reported by others twice at Cupsogue earlier in the week. Large tern, longer and taller than surrounding Common Terns but markedly smaller and thinner-billed than Royals, which it was standing with when I picked it out. Long, thin, decurved orange bill; white forhead and black back of head trailing into a shaggy crest; gray back; black legs; white underparts with a faint pinkish tinge to breast. Size and bill rule out Royal, pale vent and rump Lesser Crested.
