Observation details
Continuing 4th US record! Seen on three occasions during our visit, and often heard calling it’s down-slurred ‘Eee-el’ calls (audio recording). Seen foraging on Chinese Tallow fruits along S side of the path. All sightings center around this point (25.8941734, -97.4888434) along the pathway between the lower resaca ponds. Often staying high in trees and dead bamboo stalks, but dropping lower to forage. Like a small kiskadee but with a much smaller head, smaller bill, and lacking any rufous tones in wings/mantle. The smoother, squeal calls plus the lack of buffy wingbars confirm the more Northern 'Vermilion-crowned' ssp; the Southern ssp has a trilled call and buffy wingbars. Initially discovered on the morning of November 11th by RGV Birding Festival fieldtrip group being led by Nathan Pieplow, but quickly disappearing after their sighting and not re-found despite extensive searching by dozens of birders until November 17th by Karl Berg. Re-found this morning by Isidro Montemayor and Dan Jones. All previous US records have come from the Rio Grande Valley with a specimen record from Feb 15, 1885’s, a sight record from Anzalduas Park Mar 17-Apr 5, 1990, and a well-documented record from Jan 7-14, 2005 at Bentsen State Park.
