Observation details
When I opened the garage door about 2 pm to go out and clear the snow left by the snow plow I happened to glance up and see an obvious owl flying at least 100 feet high. It was being continually harassed by crows as it circled around for some time. The flight was buoyant. It appeared small relative to the crows but seemed to have about the same wingspan. I had time to retrieve my binoculars from the pickup, then went back to get my camera out of the truck and still had time to take photos. I thought it was a Short-eared and I have experience seeing them hunt at some altitude in mid-day when they are feeding young, which of course is not the explanation for today's owl. The photos show an underneath pattern that is consistent with Short-eared and not one of the other owls. It was long but narrow-winged and small-bodied. The overall color was a light tawny. The face appeared light whereas a Long-eared would look dark. The upper throat and breast is a bit darker than the belly while a long-eared would be darker. The underwings are light with a black area at the wrist and at the end of the primaries. Number 181 on my yard list.
