Observation details
Adult in breeding plumage. Stood out from a long way off radiating bright orange colour among slightly larger, grey-looking Red-capped Plovers. Once spotted we approached much closer (eventually a guest to within a few m). Excellent photos taken by guests to go with my digiscoped efforts. At close range, white throat bordered by red, fine dark streaks on white surrounding red border to throat, dark scapulars with bright orange fringes, cream-coloured mantle V. Red-necked Stints came to join the small group and structural differences could be seen in direct comparison, LS with longer, more finely pointed bill with slight taper at tip, longer legs, and head sitting more distinctly atop the body. Bird was mostly sleeping and preening, but eventually started to feed, generally by picking at surface while RNS were doing so with sewing machine probes.
