Observation details

It was dark outside and I was walking with a flashlight. The bird was sitting in a mowed grass field close to the edge of woods by the lake. It allowed me to approach within 10 feet. It sat stationary then quickly ran short distances with its neck extended forward. It also flew low to the ground short distances a couple times before going into brush cover. It was a small portly bird with a long orange beak, grey cheeks, big feet, a short tail and seemingly short wings. I took photos and video with my phone.
