Observation details
Based on input on my photos from Steve Hampton, I had two types of "Slate-colored" Fox Sparrows (both with corn yellow bill): (1) schistacea - head and back extensively dull, lead gray, this gray being paler than on a typical Sooty. Moderately bright rufous wings and tail. Underparts with dark brown or gray-brown markings, not rufous as on the birds in group 2. Markings on underparts were less extensive than I'm used to seeing on Sooty Fox Sparrows. The first four photos below depict three different individuals. (2) altivagans - more colorful mix of medium-paler gray and rufous on head, brighter rufous on tail and upperwings. Some reddish-brown streaking on gray back. Pale tips to median and greater coverts, and tertials. Rufous or warm brown markings on white underparts. The last photo below depicts altivagans.
