Observation details
Took off from the edge of the ditch that cuts through field behind Publix then mobbed by three crows as it flew off. I originally assumed this was a young GHO, but Pelham Rowanand Greg Jackson reviewed the photos and tell me this should be a short-eared. From Greg Jackson: "I agree with Short-eared. The bold buffy wing patches above and below and pale belly strongly contrasting with the dark upper breast rule out others. Great Horned wouldn't have the buffy wing patches. Long-eared can be surprisingly similar, but has more uniformly dark underparts, and less obvious dark wingtips below. "
