Observation details

Quite the surprise to see a Heron standing on the edge of the Arctic Ocean as it freezes at -4F. Check out the frost on its back. Could not see any features that would indicate this might be the rarer Gray Heron. In flight with binoculars the thighs seemed dark with tinge of tawny/rust. One photo seems to show white thighs but I think that is an exposure issue. Large bulky bird with dark cap and large bill. Photos by Greg MacDonald.
