Greater Scaup, two males left and center, with a Lesser Scaup sleeping at right. Seen from Perret Park, Lake Elsinore, CA. 10/25/2016
Observation details
Two males, seen floating among Northern Shovelers south east of the park. The birds appeared to be resting, I did not see them feed or dive. Through a spotting scope, I could clearly see the rounded heads, that were greenish in the great afternoon light. For comparison, there was a Lesser Scaup male adjacent to them, that had a peak showing on its head. One male extended its wings to stretch, and I could clearly see that it had white primaries and secondaries on the upper part of the wings. There were two females scaups swimming near by, and they also appeared to have rounded heads. I was unable to photograph them, so I have placed them under "Greater/Lesser Scaup". In the first photo, the Greater Scaups are on the left and in the center, with the Lesser Scaup on the right.
