Observation details
Very notable observation - only the second sighting of this species here since we began surveys in spring 2017! Heard chattering calls occasionally from a flock in the area, which I originally assumed were some early redpolls. However, when the flock flushed from the floodplain (where they were presumably feeding on the large stands of early-successional annuals, including Chenopodium berlandieri, Chenopodium simplex, Helianthus annuus, and Kochia scoparia), I pulled my binoculars out of my backpack and got a good look at the field marks of rosy finches: black caps and brown bodies with a pinkish wash. The flock circled the floodplain and then headed south, still calling frequently. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me, only my phone.
