Observation details
Female seen in grass/scrub at campervan sites, male heard then seen nearby under a pine tree. The male vocalisation was a two-toned screech, repeated at intervals of roughly five minutes. The barring on the females plumage is much heavier than on a female ring-necked pheasant and the tail is longer and not as spiky as a hen ring-necks. The male is unmistakeable and doesn't appear to have any Lady Amherst genes. See attached photos. A male has been photographed here previously - that much higher quality photo is available on the New Zealand Bird Photography Facebook page.
