Observation details
Single huge wave of scaup came through that contained several strings of birds. The first two photos attached are of the lead edge and middle of a single string within the wave. There are roughly 500 birds in these two photos. The third photo is an image of the middle of a different string to provide a further sense of the number of birds passing by. There were at least 7 or 8 similar strings of birds in the wave. I’m estimating that conservatively the wave contained 3000 birds. Finally, at home on my laptop with the photos enlarged, all the birds in the flock where I can discern the upper wing pattern appear to be Greater Scaup.
