Observation details
Continuing bird first reported by Vincent O’Brien yesterday. Seen with several other birders this AM. First seen swimming downstream near cypress trees near pier, starting at 08:33. Bird flew upstream with Mallards, circled back, landed, swam slowly downstream and finally settled amid tangle of snags, vines, cypress overhang, and pecan on opposite side of river downstream from pier. Drake was roughly same size as Mallards. Occasionally displaying dominant and/or possible courtship behavior. Yellow bill with black mark on gape. Pale golden buffy head and neck, contrasting with dark, rich brown body. Thin white bars on edges of blue speculum (contrast to thick white bars on Mallard). Pale axillaries in flight. Spent much of our time here observing this gorgeous duck. Photo to follow.
