Observation details
Estimate 350 birds, but there may have been many more. We were driving on the Boonooroo Road to check out the waders before the tide receded too far, when we noticed many Needletail all around us hawking low and high. Stopped when it was safe to get a better idea of numbers. Most were feeding above the 3m high pine plantation on the SW of the road, but through binoculars we could see many more at high altitude about a kilometre back up the road we had just driven. We watched them there for about 5 minutes before they moved to the NE and out of sight. NOTE: We had severe storms yesterday and there was lots of lowland inundation and no doubt many rising insects. Tried to photograph them and will post any half-decent images when I get a chance to download data to the laptop.
