Media notes
Juvenile in nest. Remarks: This could possibly be the first few records of Aquila hastata nesting in an electric pylon. The closest published breeding record for South India was at Mysore, where a pair was breeding successfully in a Coconut Palm tree for 2-3 years. This nest was first observed at the end of June 2013. The electric pylon was situated in the middle of thick scrub forest intercepted by trees half the size of this electric pylon. The juvenile had completely grown up when it was first sighted. When the same was observed after a week, the juvenile had already started to take short glides around the electric pylon where the nest was. The juvenile also used to test its wings against head-on wind by taking off a few feet from the perch and landing back again. It was also observed to return back to the nest when the parents brought prey to it. The prey (once a Field Rat and a Toad another time) were consumed in the nest itself during two different observations. - VA. Date added to OBI: April 08, 2015.
