Observation details
UPDATE 10/1/13: The bird has now been identified as a Parasitic Jaeger "on the Long-tailed" end of the spectrum. See a complete description of the identification on Caleb Putnam's blog: http://www.aviantendencies.blogspot.com/2013/09/the-holland-state-park-jaeger-and.html 9/20/13 NOTES: Juv./imm. dark morph jaeger found sitting on the beach. Occasionally would stand and at times would fly, but would always come back to the beach area to sit. Initially identified as Pomarine due to rounded central rectricie (only 1) protruding from tail, double white wrist commas on the underwing (outer comma much larger and more obvious), black and white barred undertail coverts, black and white peppered underwing, dark brown scaly patterning on the belly contrasting with darker solid colored breast. Head also shows dark cap and lighter nape. Bill did seem to be small for Pomerine. Size (without direct comparison) seemed to be like that of a Ring-billed Gull. Due to my lack of Jaeger identification experience in the field, the absolute identification of this bird could not be made in the field. Currently the identification is being carefully scrutinized as it there are characteristics showing a tendency toward Long-tailed.
