***rare; sitting on the water off cove, first May record for Massachusetts in eBird; first seen by MJI through binoculars and obviously a murre: black above, white below, with short tail and runded head with short bill. Through binoculars it appeared to have the squat, short-necked, thick-billed shape of Thick-billed (and Ryan independently agreed), but definitive field marks could not be seen. Fortunately, Ryan's digital SLR allowed us to take and zoom photos and see the following diagnostic marks which show in the photos: 1) white breast comes up to lower throat in a sharp V and met a dusky or whitish throat, indicating an immature; 2) rather short, thick-based bill. Given that it was an immature, Common Murre is essentially eliminated by the dark face, but the breast pattern and bill shape were diagnostic. Photos;
