Observation details
Adult female. Same bird as reported the previous evening (based on the molt), roosting in the general area with hundreds of Steppe Buzzards. At around 8:30 am, when the Steppe Buzzards were rising up from the trees and starting to funnel, this Honey-buzzard flew straight for us and then overhead; it was the closest raptor in the sky and showed extremely well as it flew over. Seen well in perfect light, and fairly close before rising up and joining some Steppe Buzzards in a funnel. Diagnostic throat pattern, largely white flight feathers with black trailing edge, lack of black [mostly] on the carpals, banded tail, broad wings, and comparatively [for a honey-buzzard] short tail; also significantly larger than the Steppe Buzzards. Many pictures taken; Dick Forsman has observed photos and confirmed this record.
