Observation details
** Surprising, but with the precedent from this morning: a report from this morning by Tim Healy of a bird moving south over Astoria near the East River. My first from land in Nassau. Immature going quickly westbound over the breakers. Larger than BOGU, structurally more like RBGU. White head except for black semi-collar and ear spot. Dark beak and big beady eye. Mantle light gray, outer primaries and leading edge of outer wing black, as well as tips of inner primaries, and diagonal swath across inner wing. Larger triangular panel across middle of each wing with trailing edge as base. Thinly black-tipped tail. Photos.
