Observation details
Scratching around the vegetation along the ditch next to the Sara Fleischmann building. Probably P. i. altivagans ("Slate-colored") but possibly P. i. zaboria ("Red")... we seem to get such birds (which lean more towards altivagans?) regularly in fall. Gray back with rusty streaks (more visible in person than in these blurry photos), gray/red head pattern, rusty streaks below, and orange/yellow lower mandible are all consistent with this being a Red Fox Sparrow ssp. "zaboria" but might also be consistent with "altivagans". The rather faint rusty streaking on the back, however, combined with the messy malar area, probably is more suggestive of altivagans than zaboria.
