Observation details
Another juvenile. Great scope looks at about 100 meters in good light. Photos. Juvenile dowitcher showing all the features typical of Short-billed. We observed rufous internal markings on the tertials and wing coverts, a warm rufous wash on the breast, a very rounded head with a sharply contrasting reddish cap, a yellowish tinged bill base, and broad white bars in the tail. Dave also mentioned spotting on the breast sides. I did notice the breast in general was very heavily marked, which appears to be typical of Caurinus, though I am hesitant to assign subspecies to juveniles at this time. Was not really associating at all with the Long-billed Dowitchers that were in the same general area, which seems to be typical of this species. Was this an excellent year for Short-billed Dowitcher in our area, or is this a highly overlooked species? Guess we will find out in the future.
