Observation details
The last few nights have seen the local Moreporks in fantastic voice, but always deceptively far away... until now!!! The moment those little hoots piped up, I could tell they were IMMEDIATELY outside my window this time. Should I go?? Should I catch up on some sleep at last?? The answer was all too clear... that's how I found myself slipping about in the mossy, muddy ground by the house as the calls got louder and louder, reverberating in my chest... the glimpse of an eyeshine on a long, rolling neck... and then... there it was. Right there, up on a high branch, its head rolling this way and that as it craned its neck out and hooted, its whole throat noticeably inflating as it drew breath to make its sound... a very beautiful and rather rangy MOREPORK with its huge yellow eyes!!! I must admit I didn't spend much time with it as it was very cagey by the Morepork's usually actively curious standards, clearly on account of the other Morepork calling a fair way off past the other side of the house. One moment, though, will always stand out in my memory; I decided to try and pish to see if that would make it look at the camera properly... the reaction couldn't have been more startling; the Owls head snapped around, its eyes bulging bright golden and its brows flared wide!!! It flew a short distance away after that, and I took that as my cue to leave this beautiful little creature to its night...
