Observation details
I was just preparing to head up to the Golf Course Lake from the Pond when something I have very often wondered about and yet never seen before finally, FINALLY happened!!! I don't know why I looked up at the two Lorikeets that hurtled in almost at eye level, stalling frantically as they realised I was there... but... the long, pointed tails flared out into spikes!!! The green bellies marbled with yellow and orange!!! The large, blue heads!!! There, after wondering if they ever came here for year after year, constantly looking at every Lorikeet flock just in case... two big, bold and beautiful RAINBOW LORIKEETS, THE FIRST EVER FOR ORIELTON ON RECORD!!!!! What followed was a fantastic chase from tree to tree at the back of the ponds, the Rainbows always keeping a little ahead of me on their buzzing, whirring wings, and several times I was sure I'd treed them I'd approach to see nothing of the sort was true. What was I going to do?? Would I really not bag a shot of the newest bird for my birding home?? Much as I'm sure my word would be believed, I wouldn't be able to rest until I proved it for once and for all. And then... suddenly, it sank in; there, in one of the dead trees, was a very nice Lorikeet roost, with plenty of Musks... and... I tried my luck with a scan, and there they were!!! They moved slower overall, and were much happier to use their beaks as an extra limb to clamber about in the branches... what a remarkable character the latest Orielton species is!!!!
