Observation details
Catching sea urchins; preening. Pacific Gulls (Larus pacificus) catch sea urchins at low tide on the Leander Reef near Port Denison boat harbour, then fly in to drop them on the carpark (and sometimes on parked cars) to break them open. Opportunistic Silver Gulls wait nearby to feed on the uneaten remains of the sea urchins. After fishing the Pacific Gulls often perch on the low limestone cliff above the reef to rest and preen.
