Observation details
Whoa! We were about to leave when there was a noticeable migrant pulse coming in (~0830), of which this bird was a part of. Admittedly, since my first looks were pretty obscured, I called it a Blackpoll (BBWA wasn't solidly on my radar) due to the obvious wing-bars and chunky outline of the bird as a result of initial poor views. I eventually corrected my earlier statement and called it a "Baypoll" (BBWA/BLPW) since I couldn't confirm BLPW yet. Thankfully, the bird remained in the same vicinity and after the group moved over to search for the bird, it popped out on a cypress branch, giving everyone in the group good looks, confirming Bay-breasted Warbler. The bird was then seen multiple times foraging in the cypresses and making short forays to the ground over next 30-35 minutes, until we eventually left the bird with the m.o.b. Husky warbler with prominent bright white wing-bars; olive green uppers with dusky yellow wash to head with light throat; plain, unstreaked breast; and a faint hint of chestnut/bay tones to the flanks and undertail coverts (really depended on the lighting and angle in order to see). Tail appeared short with long untacs. Dark legs and feet evident in pics. Overall, more plain and muted in appearance (esp. in the face) than Blackpoll. Subtle but amazing bird; perhaps a HY bird due to drab appearance and attenuated tips to rectrices? Unsure of age/sex though.
