Observation details
Rare. Came into scolds with three redstarts and a Wilson’s. Initially seen naked eye, immediately recognized the combination of facial pattern and wingbar and rattled off photos. Small and slender warbler, with a longish pointed bill. Pale gray underparts, darker wings fading into olive on back, prominent yellow coverts, slightly darker Gray mask and throat offset by a paler malar stripe, dull yellow cap. No signs of hybridization. Stayed in the vicinity of a clearing with a cedar (36.8249827, -76.1223076) and worked north in dense vegetation along the canal. Never made it quite up to the bridge, and lost it after about 30 mins of off and on viewing. Acrobatic and active forager, tough to get in the open for very long. Glad I was able to get a few other birders on it, 1st for city of Virginia Beach according to Rob. Photographed.
