"wild-type" African Collared Dove
Observation details
Today an African Collared Dove was calling from the street light in our front yard. I have been occasionally hearing this call for a while now but this is the first time I was able to find who was making that call. I was able to take a series of photos through our windows with our smoke-filled skies as a background. The call was the typical two syllable call of this species starting with a single short "coo" followed by a longer trilled "coo". It's appearance was very similar to a Eurasian Collared Dove but had all the marks of an African including the white undertail coverts and vent area, white outer tail feathers with no black extension down the sides of the tail and a slight pinkish cast to the breast. It did have slightly paler wings than a Eurasian but in looking at photos online of wild type African Collared Doves in their African range I don't see that the slightly paler primaries are that remarkable of a field mark. I don't know about the provenance of this bird but apparently they are being found more frequently around the country, often mixed in with Eurasian birds.
