Observation details
The two white spots on the head and the larger triangular bill on this scoter eliminated Black Scoter as a possible choice. The lack of white on the secondaries ruled out the White-winged Scoter. Therefore, we identified this as a Surf Scoter. We thought this was a first year bird because of the all dark nape.
