Observation details
Note: deemed Apus barbatus complex, but no subspecies listed until the true status of birds in the region can be ascertained. As A. b. sladeniae and A. b. [barbatus complex] are considered separate species by Gill, et al., they are assigned to Apus sp. here. Seen at extremely close range; black bodies with lighter black wings; calls were similar to that of Apus barbatus; birds were foraging near clearing in rainforest along road. Their general shape and size was similar to that of Apus barbatus that I encountered in South Africa; shape and size rule out Apus batesi, and calls rule out Apus apus.
