Observation details
The bird was feeding in a banyan (Ficus bengalensis) tree. It would occasionally fly to nearby vegetation, but continue to fly back. Based on comparison of the images and observation in different field guides, we had concluded the species as Indian cuckoo. However 4 year later (Sept 2020) following a discussion with the reviewers (Prathamesh Desai, Saurabh Sawant) we have reviewed and updated the ID to Lesser cuckoo. This was mainly following questions about the habitat (open cultivation area, rather than forest as preferred by Indian) as well as a certain compactness of the shape and smaller bill. Lesser being rare (vagrant) to Mumbai region was not considered when the record was entered. After this record, a vagrant Lesser cuckoo has been recorded over subsequent years in the winter months in this very same spot which helped to confirm this bird as Lesser Cuckoo.
