Observation details
A number of birds were hiding in a small patch of grass at the base of the spillway, two Bobolinks, two Brown-headed Cowbirds, and multiple Savannah Sparrows. This bird flushed, circled, and initially got away unidentified. Limited amount of white in tail and soft rattle given, followed by some "keeyo" calls, had us scratching our head. Ten minutes later a more clear-cut Lapland Longspur was heard overhead then seen, ultimately returning to the same patch of grass near the spillway, then oddly perching in a Baccharis where it gave good looks. It then joined Horned Larks near the water. Buffy colored with dark frame auriculars, white wing bars with reddish greater coverts, pink bill, long wings, relatively short notched tail, white belly, chunky. Photos NJD. An uncommon bird here, most records probably Oct-Nov, when roughly annual, I don't see any records at all in eBird for Southern California in September, and just one from Rosarita, Baja Mexico, from late September.
