Observation details
Another exciting day. Two key developments... 1 - There are three juveniles. Previously, I had only confirmed two juveniles. 2 - One of the juveniles flew from one tree to another. That’s the first time I’ve seen one of the juveniles fly from tree to tree. When I arrived, both adults were soaring. The female was soaring above the neighborhood and carrying food. She had a small rodent in her talons. X3 was soaring high. He drifted towards the 405 (possibly crossing to the Naval Weapons Station field). He returned about 15 minutes later. I managed one bad recording of a juvenile calling. This is about what their call sounds like. It’s similar to the traditional SWHA scream, with the fundamental pitch between 2k and 3k. There are some noticeable overtones above that. The juvenile call is shorter, typically less than a second. The adult scream is usually 1-2 seconds.
