Observation details
The Western/Clark's Grebe split is one of my least favorite splits. It is hard for me to grasp two such similar species having essentially the same ranges. As the photo shows, this bird has white all around the eye and massive whitish flank patches which would point toward Clark's Grebe. How many of the distant Western type grebes were this "species" was impossible for me to say. What to call the place was a bit of a dilemma for me. The land birds were on the Lake Ogallala SRA whereas the grebes were all on Lake McConaughy.
