Observation details
While looking for the Short-tailed Shearwater on the south side of the jetty, Rob Lyske and I spotted a dark juvenile/immature jaeger flying in over the jetty breakwater and then lingered with some gulls about 200 m due south. Initial impression is that it was a dainty bird with somewhat buoyant flight. We also noted that there was limited white on the base of the outer primaries and Long-tailed Jaeger was entertained. ROLY took some distant photos and I recorded a short digiscoped video (attached). Meanwhile, Melissa Hafting, Ilya Povalyaev, and Bridget Spencer were also on the bird from a boat and obtained proper photos. The bird was assumed to be a Parasitic and shortly after, the excitement of resighting the STSH had us packing up and moving to the north side of the Jetty. Upon review of their photos, MEHA and ILPO felt the bird was a good candidate for Long-tailed Jaeger and circulated their photos with us and others with jaeger experience to confirm suspicions. Great work on Melissa and Ilya’s part for hammering out this ID. Refer to checklist S94397199 for ID notes and documentation.
