Observation details
Went back and forth trying to determine if Solitary Sandpiper or Lesser Yellowlegs for this one individual of the 2... put these pix up as a Solitary but got the following useful info from Shawneen Finnegan: "he ABA What's this bird column has lots of opinions that are problematic. It is a Lesser Yellowlegs, not a Solitary, and I can certainly see why there is a difference of opinion. Particularly with shorebirds it is critical for certain species to age it first. This is a molting adult. Juveniles show much bolder markings on all the feathers of both species in question and the new feathers molting in on the mantle and coverts are far less marked along the edges. The color tone of the photos seem warm which makes it look more like darker color of a SOSA but that could be from early morning light or camera settings. First off it has a white rump which eliminates Solitary. A SOSA would have more rounded spotting on the coverts.vs. checks seen on LEYE. The tail pattern is wrong as SOSAs have broad black-and-white bars on the all the tail feathers while LEYE have very narrow ones on the outer ones like your bird shows. Example of SOSA tail: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/367101321 LEYE tail: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/365284151 Last but not least the ABA Birding Photo Quiz Editor Tony Leukering flagged it as a Lesser Yellowlegs saying: 'LEYE -- it has checks or bars on wing coverts, NOT SPOTS' "
