Observation details
1st cycle Red-throated Loon. Photos obtained of this 1st for Boulder County. First spotted from the southwest corner of the res as it slept near the north shore. When Bill Kaempfer showed up we drove over to the north shore where we had much closer looks. It had the extensive white sides, small bill held up at an angle, pale face and underside of the neck, and pale dorsal coloration with few white spots typical of a 1st cycle RTLO. The side of the neck near the breast was a bit dusky, not the clean white contrast with the hindneck like on an adult. When first observed it was sleeping. It eventually woke up and swam around a bit. We watched it catch a large fish which it ingested. After it fed, it preened a little, stretched its wings and legs, and went back to sleep.
