Observation details
We heard that Chet had a Eurasian Collared-Dove in his neighborhood. Upon first seeing the bird, we thought the bird was decidedly smaller than a normal 13" Eurasian Collared-Dove. 11" seemed more likely. The bird had light gray, not dark gray or black primaries of a Eurasian Collared-Dove. Undertail coverts were not dark nor did they have dark outer webbing. The undertail coverts were white. We saw no evidence of it being a recently caged bird: there was little to no wear on flight feathers (remiges and retrices), which would have been typical of a caged bird, no bands on either leg. But the bird did have a bicolored bill, pink with black tip, and appeared to be missing some feathering at the base of the bill which resulted in the bill appearing abnormally long. The bird's overall appearance was lighter but not white. Dorsally it appeared cream-colored, and generally lighter ventrally. The bird was a strong flyer. Overall, this bird's appearance is more consistent with an African Collared-Dove and not with a Eurasian Collared-Dove. As an African Collared-Dove it more closely resembles its derivation, the more variable domestic Ringed Turtle-Dove, than the wild ancestral bird. The bird has been observed periodically in the neighborhood for at least a week.
