Observation details
A continuing bird, according to the "recent observations" board at the refuge visitors center, which indicated that an ANMU had been seen recently at the western end of the main lake. I checked that site on the way north, and located the bird way out on the lake. It was, however, slowly swimming towards my position, eventually getting close enough for a useful photo (see below, bird in center of image). Adult bird in breeding plumage, with the basic gray back and sides, black head, and obvious white on side of neck. Short neck, completely black head and limited white on neck rule-out a solitary Western or Clark’s Grebe chick.
