Observation details
Large'ish sandpiper (Dunlin sized) with long black legs and long, decurved black bill. Rufous throat and breast, gray wings, brownish back with gray/white speckles. Had white undertail with rufous splotches. Had white near the base of its bill. and under its wings when it stretched. Fed almost continuously by probing on mudflat and in shallow fresh water. Bird was observed looking west from Tern Road. Turn left onto Wildlife Road just past refuge headquarters; drive past Plover Road, then turn right onto Tern Road. 20-25+ birders came and went while I was there. Several photographers. We were lined up about 100 yards from intersection of Wildlife and Tern; bird was about 40 yards out from road in the company of phalaropes, dowitchers, plovers and two Willets.
