Observation details
***Rare*** Likely annual and overlooked. Almost overlooked by me as I'm not familiar with this subspecies. At least four called when flushed together giving tututu call. All juveniles. Noted some birds appeared flatter-backed compared to other Long-Billed Dowitchers, but the plumage seemed too gray and drab overall for juvenile Short-billed in my initial assessment. These birds were almost certainly of the Caurinus subspecies as they appeared very gray overall, with more limited and duller orange fringing and internal markings on the wing coverts and tertials than Hendersoni shows. Having this experience it is very easy to see why Short-billed Dowitcher is one of, if not the most overlooked species in the area.
