Observation details
First reported the day before at this location by Scott Harp. First spotted this afternoon by a young birder from Ohio who helped us all get on the bird at the birding platform. Appeared at far south end of the "mud islands" off the boat launch, in the shadows close to the cattails-- at first looking more like a dark lump and difficult to pick out from the vegetation. Later the bird began walking about and more actively feeding, sometimes moving into the sunlight. Repeatedly jabbed its bill down sharply at some food item just below the water surface. Also observed flicking its tail like a Sora! Medium-sized wading bird, all-brown body with white patches on body and white streaks on head and neck. Paler-brown face with light-orange long bill, slightly downcurved. LIFE BIRD
