Observation details
I had a good chat with a DCR PIPL researcher while here. One thing I did not know was that PIPL started nesting at this location in 2006, which roughly coincides with the first year I livied in Boston. I had assumed that this species was a breeder here longer than that. Additionally, all three PIPLs on the beach were first years. Two of them are larger, with the third bird hatching the latest. The researcher noted that the parents of that bird left (likely migrated south) approximately 10 days after it hatched, leaving it to fend for itself during an important developmental period. While the bird appears healthy, it may lead to stunted growth. This is the researcher's theory, one that I believe is plausible.
