In large screen capture of sonogram to show pattern.
Observation details
Alerted to the presence by their sweet “chyip” calls. They were at top of a tall coniferous tree and through binoculars, we could see their very heavy crossed bills. When they took off, they continued to call, three quick but sweet “chyip” notes. I recorded them as they started taking off. Based on an eBird article and comparing the pattern on the sonogram and my description of the call, I identified them as the Type 6 – Sierra Madre Crossbill. Also attaching a close-up image of the sonogram. This was a new bird for Brian.
