Observation details
I was working in the area and I was hoping to run into the species at some point. I heard the tell tale squeaky notes midway up turkey creek near a well used campsite. (33.09474, -108.48465). I never got good looks and there wad a black hawk and acorn woodpecker making quite a bit of noise. I didn't have a ton of time to spend in the area. The habitat is excellent in the canyon with large sycamores and oaks and running water. I was honestly on the lookout for trogon as well. Fast forward 5 days to August 9th. Emily was out working right near there and she got a recording of the bird at (33.095084, -108.484676). It certainly seems to be hanging out in the area. Getting a good look is difficult though. This location is much easier to access then upriver habitats and only requires 3 river crossings. As a warning though be mindful of the crossings due to monsoon storms. The water is muddy and the depth of the water can be deceiving. The road down to Turkey Creek is also in rough shape due to storms and requires high clearance. 4x4 isn't necessary but may be if you enter or leave after a big rain event.
