Observation details
Viewing from the ferry dock the bird appeared rather "chunky", even from that distance so Kyle and I headed over to the jetty to get a closer look. We stood at the jetty and waited until it eventually showed. The second I saw it I/we knew it was a Sanderling. Field marks include very chunky appearance, thick neck, black legs, black thick-ish bill, it's gray winter plumage was coming in most noticable on its back and wings with some rust flecking still visible. The rusty wash was faint but visible on its breast as well. Typical non-stop Sanderling behavior.
